As I wrote the date on my homework, my stomach dropped. I whipped my head toward my calendar and swallowed hard, feeling faint. It was my dad's birthday, and I had completely forgotten to get him a gift.
Dad would not be home from work for another hour, so I still had some time. "Think, think..." I said, pacing my bedroom floor.
Suddenly, inspiration struck, and I raced to the kitchen. Within minutes, I was dicing up vegetables on a cutting board while pots bubbled on the stove. When Dad walked in the door, a pasta dinner and fresh tossed salad were waiting for him on the table.
"Happy birthday, Dad!" I exclaimed, dabbing my forehead with a dish towel.
"You shouldn't have!" he replied with a grin.
