Excerpt from "The Scarlet Ibis": Brother was both cruel and loving toward Doodle. When Doodle was born, he was different from other children, and Brother was ashamed of him. However, as time went on, Brother helped Doodle learn to walk and do other things, even though his methods were sometimes harsh. Brother pushed Doodle hard because he wanted a normal brother to play with, but he also genuinely wanted to help Doodle improve.

One stormy afternoon, Brother ran ahead of Doodle, leaving him behind in the rain. When Brother finally returned to look for Doodle, he found him lying under a red nightshade bush, dead. Brother's pride and determination to make Doodle normal had ultimately led to this tragic end. As he held his brother's lifeless body, Brother wept, finally understanding the consequences of his actions.
