Jerome knocked on Ben’s charming front door and heard a loud bark coming from inside. His stomach knotted when Ben opened the door holding a scary-looking black dog by the collar.
“Welcome!” Ben greeted him with a warm smile.
“I-I didn’t know you had a dog,” Jerome stammered, handing Ben the plate of peanut butter cookies he had brought.
“We adopted her last year,” Ben explained. “She is sweet and friendly. She also loves cookies! Want to give her a taste?”
Ben broke off a piece of a cookie and handed it to Jerome.
Jerome gulped and tossed the treat toward Maxine who caught it in her mouth. When she nuzzled Jerome in thanks, he exhaled deeply. Maybe dogs were not so frightening after all.
