How Adjectives Work in Spanish

Explanation:
In Spanish, adjectives are words that describe nouns (people, animals, things). They tell us what something is like.

Here are the important rules:

  1. Adjectives usually go after the noun

    • Example: flor bonita → flower beautiful

    • In English, the adjective usually comes before the noun: beautiful flower.

  2. Adjectives change to match the gender of the noun

    • Masculine nouns usually use adjectives ending in -o → niño alto (tall boy)

    • Feminine nouns usually use adjectives ending in -a → niña alta (tall girl)

  3. Some adjectives don’t change

    • Some adjectives are the same for boys and girls → débil, inteligente, grande

  4. Adjectives also agree in number

    • Singular: niño alto, niña alta

    • Plural: niños altos, niñas altas
