Clip 1
Scene Description Four students sit around a table in a library. The students’ books, digital devices, and notebooks are out on the table. While they talk, other students work quietly in the background. Transcript 00:00 Marco: But she's not a giant, she's "match for giants." 00:03 Morgan: Same thing, right? 00:04 Marco: I don't know. 00:05 Lorenzo: What are you thinking, Marco? 00:07 Marco: Well, it's like Brianna said: 00:09 Ernie's trying to decide whether she's a friend or an enemy. 00:11 Morgan: Yeah? And? 00:13 Marco: To a six year-old boy giants are scary. 00:16 If he decided she looked like a giant, 00:18 that's like saying she looked like the enemy, 00:20 but to say she's "a match for giants," that's like saying... 00:24 Brianna: That she could protect him! 00:26 That if the giants were coming, Miss Hopley could fight them and win! 00:28 Morgan: You got that from one sentence? 00:30 Marco: Sometimes the truth is in the details, right? 00:33 Lorenzo: So from this experience, Ernie decides that Miss Hopley is powerful 00:37 and that she's on his side.

Clip 2
Scene Description Four students sit around a table in a library. The students’ books, digital devices, and notebooks are out on the table. While they talk, other students work quietly in the background. Transcript 00:00 Brianna: I get how Ernie feels. 00:01 It's scary to be in a new country. 00:03 My mom still gets nervous about grocery shopping. 00:06 Marco: Why? I mean, have you asked her why? 00:08 Brianna: I think it's because she's afraid of talking to strangers. 00:11 Most people are nice but if someone is rude to her 00:13 it could really hurt her feelings. 00:15 Morgan: I don't like mean people either! 00:16 Brianna: I know, but when it's your country, or when you feel like you belong here, 00:21 I think it bothers you less. 00:22 Lorenzo: So, it's a confidence thing? 00:24 Morgan: Do you think that's one of the things Ernie learns? 00:27 Confidence?

Clip 3
Scene Description Four students sit around a table in a library. The students’ books, digital devices, and notebooks are out on the table. While they talk, other students work quietly in the background. Transcript 00:00 Lorenzo: The section where Ernie talks about her is really interesting. 00:03 Listen to this: "It was as if in that closet we were both discovering together 00:07 the secret to the English language. 00:09 And grieving together over the tragedies of Bo Peep." 00:11 Brianna: The tragedies of Bo Peep? 00:13 Marco: She lost her sheep, didn't you hear? 00:16 Lorenzo: Miss Ryan seems to be experiencing it with Ernie, 00:19 as if for the first time. 00:21 Morgan: Right! A few lines later he says, 00:23 "It was not only that we sensed she was with it but also that she was with us." 00:28 So not only is she cool, but she's also on their side. 00:32 Marco: Hey! That's kind of what Ernie likes about Miss Hopley, right? 00:35 That she's on his side. 00:36 Lorenzo: There's more. 00:37 He says that, "Miss Ryan loosened me and my classmates from the 00:40 safe anchorage of the desk 00:42 for recitations at the blackboard and consultations at her desk." 00:45 She's encouraging them to move around in the world. 00:48 Morgan: So, maybe confidence is one of the things he learns? 00:51 Brianna: His confidence grows as he learns to read too, 00:53 like when he pronounces butterfly for the first time. 00:55 Marco: Not only is he proud of himself 00:57 but he talks about how Miss Ryan makes a big deal about it. 01:00 Lorenzo: She celebrates every step of their progress. 01:02 Morgan: Miss Hopley gets excited about stuff too. 01:04 When the kids in the class share their stories about home, 01:07 it says she expresses "wonder." 01:09 "It was easy for me to feel that becoming a proud American, as she said we should, 01:13 did not mean feeling ashamed of being a Mexican." 01:16 Lorenzo: Gosh, Miss Hopley's the best. 01:18 Brianna: Better than Miss Ryan? 01:19 Lorenzo: Hard to say. 01:20 Miss Hopley makes the kids feel like their stories from home are really important 01:24 Marco: So it sounds like Ernie doesn't have to lose his Mexican identity 01:27 in order to assimilate. 01:28 Morgan: Maybe you're right Marco. 01:29 Maybe assimilating is easy for Ernie. 01:31 Marco: I change my mind.
01:32 Morgan: What? 01:33 Marco: Yeah. Ernie's lucky that Miss Ryan and Miss Hopley are super cool. 01:36 But what he's doing at six years old? Not easy.
