Saturday mornings at the park are supposed to be filled with my family playing soccer. I lived for Sundays. Now, I dread them. The sunless sky above the field reflects my mood. I stare out into the gloom through the window. My hand rests on the door handle for a moment. "I still don't understand why you can't stay, Mom."

"Mija, I told you. I need to help Derek cater today's party," she replies exasperated. "We'll be done by the time soccer's over," she continues. "You won't even miss me. Besides, Derek said he would make it up you!" She squeezes his hand on the stick shift. He turns and smiles. I look away in disgust.

"Dad would have stayed," I whisper to my hands. The look on her face tells me she heard me. I bite my lip. My anger overpowers the rising shame I feel. I open the car door to make my escape.

She opens her mouth, "Mari, I-"

"Yeah, Ma, I get it! Whatever," I snap louder than I intended. A flicker of pain flashes across her face. She begins to say she's sorry again when I slam the door shut. As the car drives away, I see dark clouds gather at the end of the pitch. They promise rain. "Perfect," I heave as I make my way to the field.
