In French, there are three indefinite articles: un, une, des.
un & une = a or an --> Il y a un dossier. Il y a une fiche.
--> There is a folder. There is a worksheet.
des = some --> Il y a des dossiers. Il y a des fiches.
--> There are some folders. There are some worksheets.
*Note: in English, we can leave "some" out in the sentences above. However, in French, "des" cannot be left out.
Remember, all nouns have a gender in French. Blame the Romans!
