National Hero Day Reflective Writing (October)

A hero is someone whose actions help others, often through courage, service, or sacrifice. A celebrity is someone who is widely known or talked about. Sometimes a person can be both—but they are not the same thing.

Your task (choose ONE)

Pick one person you consider a hero:

  • Historical hero (from history)

  • Community hero (someone who helps your school/community)

  • Personal hero (someone who has helped you or your family)

Write 2–3 paragraphs

Use this structure to help you organize your thinking:

  • Paragraph 1 (Who + What): Who is your hero? What specific actions did they take? Include at least 2 concrete details (examples, events, choices, or acts of service).

  • Paragraph 2 (Why it matters): How did their actions affect other people? What values do they show (for example: courage, responsibility, perseverance, kindness, justice)?

  • Paragraph 3 (Optional): How does this connect to you? What is one way you could show one of the same values in your own life?

Include this comparison sentence

Somewhere in your writing, include one sentence that compares a hero and a celebrity. (Example frame: “Unlike a celebrity, a hero…”)

Sentence starters (optional)

  • “I chose ___ as my hero because…”

  • “One specific example of what they did was…”

  • “This matters because…”

  • “A hero is different from a celebrity because…”

  • “This connects to my life because…”
