I sat on my front porch, licking a red popsicle that was melting faster than I could eat it.
“Still not here yet?” my mom asked, poking her head out from the air-conditioned house.
“Not yet,” I answered, lowering my eyes. “I’ve been waiting for a million years.”
As if on cue, the mail carrier, Mr. Pearson, rounded the corner and climbed the steps of the porch. “Waiting for something?” he asked, sounding out of breath. Beads of sweat trickled down his red face, but he flashed me a friendly smile as he handed me an envelope with my name on it.
“Thank you! Finally!” I exclaimed. I offered Mr. Pearson a bottle of water, which he gratefully accepted as he tipped his hat and headed on his way.
