“Victoria, can I speak with you?” Victoria’s teacher asked. Victoria stopped on her way out of the classroom and turned with butterflies in her stomach.
“Am I in trouble?” she asked meekly.
“Oh, no!” her teacher responded. “I wanted to encourage you to submit a piece to the art festival this month.”
Victoria’s face turned bright red. “Oh, I couldn’t,” she answered quietly. “I can’t compete against experienced artists.”
“We all start somewhere,” her teacher responded with a reassuring smile. “Besides, the judges offer feedback, so it is a learning experience.”
Victoria gulped, remembering a recent conversation with her mom about the importance of trying new things. Finally, she took a deep breath and said, with her voice shaking, “If you think I should, then I will.”
What is the theme of this passage?
How did the characters thoughts or actions help you determine the theme?
In the winter, most states in the Northern part of the United States see a lot of precipitation in the form of snow. The U.S. averages about 28 inches of snow per year, but states like Colorado can average anywhere from 60-100 inches annually!
When there is more than a few inches of snow that falls in the early morning hours, it makes it difficult for snowplows to get out and plow the roads in time for school. As a result, many schools implement a delayed start. Sometimes, schools must close. Many children do not mind, though. When schools are closed, they get the day off and can play in the snow all day. If the roads are too icy to drive anywhere, kids get to stay home and build snowmen, snow forts, and go sledding with their neighborhood friends.
