At recess, Erin collected colorful rocks. She started with 47 rocks in her pocket. She gave 18 rocks to her friend Maya to start Maya’s own collection. Then Erin lost 9 rocks when her pocket had a small tear. Erin wondered how many rocks she had left.  

In art class, Mr. King set out 60 paintbrushes. Before painting began, 24 brushes were already wet and could not be used. During cleanup, students accidentally broke 7 more brushes. Mr. King needed to find out how many good brushes remained for the next class. 

On Monday morning, Ms. Lopez brought a big basket of apples to class. The basket held 35 shiny apples. After a reading break, the class ate 19 of the apples for a snack. Later that day, the science team borrowed 6 more apples for an experiment. The class wanted to know how many apples were still in the basket.
