GIFS: A PRODUCT OF THE 80’S?

Although GIFs were invented in 1987, they have only become widespread in recent years. Technically speaking, GIFs are short, looping frames of animation, sometimes with embedded meme-type text. GIFs have captured the attention of nearly everyone who communicates electronically today. Far from “dumbing down” communication, GIFs present messages in a way that is relevant, engaging, and immediately recognizable. Often, a GIF is so spot-on that it is delightful to receive. Many people have opened a text or email containing a GIF and immediately burst out laughing. Now that is effective communication!

A GIF FOR EVERY OCCASION

There are thousands of GIFs to fit any situation. Some are thoughtful, some are cute, and others are purely humorous. The one thing they all have in common is clarity, which is why they are so effective. Whether it’s a teddy bear saying “I love you” or SpongeBob SquarePants flossing, GIFs capture emotions in a way that words sometimes cannot. A well-timed, funny GIF can even remind someone of a friend or family member, prompting spontaneous sharing just because.

INFUSED WITH POP CULTURE

Another reason GIFs are great for modern communication is their deep connection to pop culture. Pop culture includes shared experiences such as popular brands like McDonalds and Target, TV shows like The Fresh Prince of Belair, and nostalgic moments. Almost everyone can relate to familiar characters, popular foods, viral memes, and common experiences from the past. A GIF featuring a well-known TV character making an exaggerated expression can perfectly capture a thought or feeling. When used well, GIFs provide a strong sense of satisfaction by conveying an idea so accurately.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CLARITY

Some argue that modern communication should follow traditional academic rules, believing that GIFs, memes, and abbreviations weaken formal writing skills. However, the most important part of communication is ensuring the message is received clearly. Since GIFs help eliminate confusion and enhance emotional expression, they have become an accepted and valued form of communication. Whether funny, heartfelt, congratulatory, or sympathetic, GIFs make it easier to say what needs to be said.
