Theodore Roosevelt: A President for the People

Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States. He was president from 1901 to 1909. He was part of the Republican Party. People thought of Roosevelt as a very energetic and active president. He wanted to make things better and protect nature.

Theodore Roosevelt, who people often called Teddy, was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City. He was the second child of Theodore Roosevelt, Senior, who was a rich businessman, and Martha Stewart Bulloch.

When Teddy was a kid, he was often sick with asthma. But this didn't stop him from being adventurous. He was very curious about the world. He loved nature and animals. He collected different things and wrote down what he saw.

He was taught at home because his family traveled a lot. They went to Europe and Asia. He learned that being active helped his asthma. So, he started exercising and boxing.

From 1876 to 1880, Roosevelt went to Harvard University. He studied law. In 1880, he married Alice Hathaway Lee. He started going to law school at Columbia University, but he quit to become a politician.

In 1881, he was chosen to be part of the New York State Assembly. He became known for fighting bad behavior in the government. Soon after, Teddy's wife, Alice, had a baby girl in 1884. But two days later, on February 12, 1884, Alice died suddenly from problems with her kidneys. Teddy's mother, Martha, had also died on the same day.

Teddy was very sad. He went out west to the Dakota territory. He started a ranch called Elkhorn Ranch near Medora, North Dakota. Teddy worked as a cattle rancher and even helped the police as a deputy sheriff. For the next few years, he went back and forth between his home in New York and the ranch.

In 1886, Roosevelt got married again to Edith Kermit Carow. They had five children together. He tried to become the mayor of New York City, but he lost the election. Soon after, he became the police commissioner of New York City. He fought bad behavior in the police force. Many people admired him for this.

In 1896, President William McKinley made him the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In 1889, the USS Maine sank in Havana Harbor, Cuba. This made the United States go to war with Spain. Roosevelt quit his job to start the Rough Riders. This was a group of volunteer soldiers. He showed how brave he was during the Battle of San Juan Hill. People all over the country praised him.

This success helped him get elected as the governor of New York in 1898. Roosevelt had a lot of energy and wanted to make things better. The Republican Party noticed him. They chose him to be the Vice President under William McKinley in 1901.

But McKinley was assassinated later that year. Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th president of the United States on September 14, 1901, after McKinley died.

As president, Roosevelt wanted to be fair to everyone. He called his plan the "Square Deal." He wanted to make things better for workers, protect people from big companies that had too much power, and make sure products were safe. People called him the "trustbuster" because he broke up big companies that controlled entire industries.

In the election of 1904, Roosevelt was elected for his second term as president. He was the first president who became president after the previous president died and then won a full term on his own.

During his second term, Roosevelt kept trying to make things better. He knew it was important to protect America's nature for future generations. He started the United States Forest Service. He also signed the Antiquities Act, which allowed him to create national monuments.

When it came to other countries, Roosevelt wanted America to be strong. He famously said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." He helped end the war between Russia and Japan. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for this. He also helped build the Panama Canal. He wanted America to be a powerful and important country in the world.

After he stopped being president in 1909, Roosevelt went to Africa. He went on a safari and collected animals for the Smithsonian Museum. He didn't like what President William Taft was doing. So, Roosevelt decided to run for president again in 1912 with the Progressive Party, also known as the Bull Moose Party. But he lost the election to Woodrow Wilson.

Roosevelt stayed active in politics. He wanted America to be ready for World War I. He didn't agree with President Wilson's plans. On January 6, 1919, Theodore Roosevelt died in his sleep at the age of 60 from a blood clot in his lungs.

Woodrow Wilson's Vice President, Thomas Marshall, said that death had to take Roosevelt while he was sleeping because if he had been awake, there would have been a fight.
