Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āWake up,ā yelled Uncle Jim. āWe have a big day of letterboxing ahead of us!ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Suzy rubbed her eyes. āWhatās letterboxing?ā she asked.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āIāll tell you and your sister about it at breakfast,ā Uncle Jim said.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Suzy and her sister Kayla were staying with their aunt and uncle while their mom was away. They sleepily walked into the kitchen and sat at the table with Uncle Jim and Aunt Jessie. āSo, what exactly is letterboxing?ā asked Suzy.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āA letterbox is a small box hidden somewhere outside,ā Aunt Jessie said. āThe box holds a notebook, an ink pad, and a rubber stamp. Letterboxersāpeople like usā post hints about where they have hidden their boxes and hunt for boxes left by other letterboxers. When we find a box, we use our own stamp to mark the notebook in the box. Then we use the stamp from the box we found to mark our own notebook. Finally, we put the box back in its hiding place.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āIt sounds like a treasure hunt!ā said Kayla.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āIād rather shoot baskets,ā Suzy said, grabbing her basketball.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āWhat do we do first?ā Kayla asked, looking at Uncle Jim and Aunt Jessie.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āWe have to make a special stamp just for you,ā said Aunt Jessie.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Uncle Jim helped Kayla draw a little rose on a pink eraser and cut around the lines of the drawing. The eraser was now a stamp.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Aunt Jessie showed Kayla how to press the stamp onto an ink pad and then onto the page. When Kayla lifted the stamp, there was a perfect print of her rose.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āIt works!ā Kayla cried.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Uncle Jim smiled and handed Kayla a new notebook. āThis will be your letterboxing notebook,ā he said. āReady to go, Suzy?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āCanāt I please stay here?ā Suzy begged, still holding her basketball.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āSorry, but youāre coming with us,ā laughed Uncle Jim.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Suzy sighed, but she put the ball down and got in the car.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā At the park, they watched a video together on Uncle Jimās phone. āGo to Pinetree Pass. Find a large cracked rock by the waterfall,ā the woman in the video explained.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Uncle Jim pointed. āPinetree Pass is at the top of the hill. Weāve got some climbing to do!ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā When they finally reached the top, Suzy noted, āThereās the waterfall, but I donāt see the cracked rock.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Everyone spread out and began searching. āI think I found it!ā Kayla shouted, pointing to a rock split down the middle. Everyone came running. Aunt Jessie reached into the crack and pulled out a small box.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā They all cheered as they opened the letterbox. Kayla, Uncle Jim, and Aunt Jessie marked the notebook with their stamps. Then they used the stamp in the box to mark their own notebooks.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āCan I put the letterbox back?ā asked Suzy.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Aunt Jessie handed Suzy the box. Suzy carefully placed the box back where they had found it. She turned to Aunt Jessie and Uncle Jim. āWhen we get home, would you help me make my own stamp?ā Suzy asked.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āThat sounds like a plan,ā said Uncle Jim. āWeāll even have time to go letterboxing again before you and Kayla leave.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āI hope so. I already know what I want my stamp to look like,ā said Suzy.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āA basketball?ā asked Kayla.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āHow did you know?ā said Suzy.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āJust a lucky guess,ā Kayla laughed.
