“Your new little sister is so cute,” Lucia said as she pumped her swing. “It must be hard to have so many siblings at your house. Now there are five kids there!”
Emily looked surprised. “Hard? No, I think it is fun!”
“What about the mess, though?” Emily asked. “Your house must be messy all the time.”
“Yes, it can get very messy,” Emily said, laughing. “But we all pitch in to help. Is it boring at your house?”
“I don’t find it boring,” Lucia answered. “I have lots to do to keep me busy. Besides, if I want company, I can just come visit you!”
“We say, ‘the more the merrier,’” Emily replied with a grin as the bell rang.

When you eat food, it goes through a journey of digestion or breaking down. The food starts by being masticated in the mouth. As the food is chewed into small pieces, it mixes with saliva, making it easier to swallow. The tongue pushes the food back into the esophagus, a tube that connects the throat with the stomach. The esophagus squeezes and relaxes involuntarily – without you having to think about it. This process of peristalsis moves the food along into the stomach. The stomach continues to break down the food until it enters the small intestine. This very long organ pulls healthy parts of food, called nutrients, into the bloodstream so your body can use them. Finally, the long intestine eliminates waste, sending it out of your body.
