Astronauts are allowed limited personal effects on mission. When sending astronauts into space, mass equals money. The heavier the payload of a spacecraft, the more difficult and expensive it is to launch.

We also know that mental health of the crew is just as equally important as physical health. Personal Preference Kits, or PPKs, do not include the required clothing, food, or drink to function. They are the extras to create comfort on the voyage.

For this assignment, the challenge is to create your PPK.

Restrictions:

  • Cannot exceed 8” x 5” x 2”. You may use a large (gallon) Ziploc bag as a close approximation.

  • Its weight is limited to 1.5 pounds (~680 grams). These were the limitations of the Space Shuttle program and a human mission to Mars will have similar limitations.

Option 1: Use a gallon size Ziploc bag or similar and pack your PPK. Take a photo and upload it here.

Option 2:

Google Slides Template

Download the PPK template and add pictures of the items you would pack in your PPK. Save the file and upload it here.

If you use the Google Slides version, you will want to save it as an image to upload using File > Download > PNG image
