Question 1
1.

Warm-up: A car that's been sitting out in the sun on a hot summer day gets really hot inside and out.

Why does this happen?

Open the Greenhouse Effect Gizmo: https://apps.explorelearning.com/gizmos/launch-gizmo/372
Question: How do greenhouse gases affect Earth’s climate?

Set the Simulation speed to slow

Set the Greenhouse gases level to 10%

Select the Bar Chart tab

Click Play and observe the changes in the 3 bars.
  • T (°C) represents changes in temperature measured in degrees Celsius
  • Heat flow represents changes in heat going in and out of the atmosphere

Question 2
2.
What do you notice about the heat flow into and out of Earth's atmosphere?

Heat into the atmosphere __________during the day and __________ at night. Heat out of the atmosphere __________ from day to night.
#1 Heat Flow In: heat coming from the sun

#2 Heat Flow Out: Heat being release back into space from the Earth

#3 Heat Flow Out being interrupted by greenhouse gases, causing heat to be trapped in the atmosphere.

Question 3
3.

Click Reset
Select the Bar Chart tab, and click Play. Your greenhouse gas concentration should be at 10%
  • The highest temperature during the day is around 70 degrees
  • The highest heat flow in during the day is around 64
  • The heat flow out is 20
Question 4
4.
Change the greenhouse slider to 50%, increasing your amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Let the simulation run for a few days. How does this change your...
  • Heat Flow In __________
  • Heat Flow Out __________
  • Temperature __________
From the simulation with less greenhouse gases?

Question 5
5.

Reset your Gizmos. Change your greenhouse gases to 50%, Click Play, and this time observe the GRAPH tab. Let the simulation run for a few days and the pause it, What is happening to the Temperature (the green line)?

Question 6
6.

Now move the greenhouse gases to 0% and click play, what changes happen to your temperature (green line) and your heat out (purple line)?

Question 7
7.

The influence of greenhouse gases on temperature is called the greenhouse effect.

Based on what you have seen, How does having a higher concentration of greenhouse gases effect the earth's ability to release heat back out to space?

(You can use the Gizmos model to help you answer this question. Look at heat out at 10% the look at heat out at 50%, how does it change?)

Question 8
8.

Use your favorite search engine to find one interesting and random fact about the greenhouse effect. The more random, weird, and little known the better. I will share some of the facts you find in our next class.

Question 9
9.
Bonus Science!
Predict: When you change the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which factor(s) do you expect to change?
Heat flow in
Heat flow out
Temperature
I need help
I am getting there
I got this
Learning Target 1: I can Describe how greenhouse gases warm the atmosphere
Learning Target 2: I can Identify and Describe one factor that impacts the greenhouse effect.
Learning Target 3: I can Explain the cycle of heating and cooling in the Earth's past.
