Like the first Christians, Muhammad and his early followers did not think they were starting a new religion.
However, their teachings had become changed over time. Muhammad had been sent to restore them to what God intended.
Islam took root first in Muhammad's Arabian homeland. The cities of Mecca and Medina became its holiest sites, but Jerusalem is also sacred.
After Muhammad's death, Muslims set out to create an Islamic empire. In 638, Jerusalem surrendered.
