Think about the American Dream and what that should look like when you’re an adult, or for future generations...
Sample Final Version
I am glad to stand with you today, as we think about a great man, who believed in freedom for all people, I too have a dream.
One day when I was about 9 years old, I was walking along the HIllsborough River with my grandfather.
I remember we saw a homeless man sitting among the rocks of the riverbank. He was alone, his clothes were dirty, and he was skinny. He was sitting up, but his shoulders sagged, and his eyes were closed. A group of four teenage boys were pointing at him, laughing at him, calling him a hobo. My grandfather asked me to think about the homeless man as a little boy.
I remember my grandfather said, “I wonder if a little boy would dream of being homeless some day? Or, did something happen in this man’s life that took away his dreams, and as a result, he lost his way?”
I remember thinking about my own dreams and wondering what might happen that would cause me to become lost, to lose my way, to be in dirty clothes, to be without a home. I hoped that would never happen to me.
I have a dream that places filled with loneliness will instead be filled with togetherness
I have a dream that people will offer assistance rather than point and ridicule
I have a dream that what makes us feel superior to others will be overcome by what makes us have empathy for each other
I have a dream that the sadness of one person will not be the source of laughter for another.
I have a dream that one day those who have more will help those who have almost nothing.
I have a dream that I will make the world a better place for those who have lost their dreams and who feel alone and afraid.
With hope and faith, we all can change the sadness of those around us.
With this hope and faith, we will change isolation into inclusion and turn the pain of lost dreams into a belief in the possibility of dreams.
“My life is part of the global life,” and I too have a dream.
