After a warm spring and heavy rains, a nearby lake experienced a large algae bloom. Algae is a kind of plant that floats in water. When it blooms, it takes over large parts of the lake. Nutrients from fertilized farm fields washed into the lake, feeding algae growth. As algae multiplied, sunlight could not reach the plants rooted in the bottom of the lake, causing them to die. Fish that relied on those plants for food declined in number. The algae prevented these plants from releasing oxygen in the water - many fish died from lack of oxygen. Fishermen reported fewer catches that season. In response, the county recommended large areas of vegetation between farm fields and the lake to reduce runoff of farm chemicals. The county also planned to monitor fertilizer use in high‑risk areas. The neighbors to the lake complained about the horrific smell of dead fish and wanted to know what could be done.
Two students made two different claims. Put the evidence that best supports each claim. Not every piece of evidence will be used.
The algae bloom took over the lake
Sunlight was blocked and plants died
Fish died from lack of oxygen
Nutrients from fertilized farm fields fed algae growth.
County will monitor fertilizer use
Fisherman reported fewer catches this summer
The county recommended vegetation to reduce runoff from farm fields
Tonya's Claim: The biggest problem is algae and they should kill the algae.
Brandie's Claim: The biggest problem is the farm chemicals and they should stop the chemicals from reaching the lake.
