What is a TRAGIC HERO?

According to Aristotle, a tragic hero is typically:

  • Of noble birth or standing

  • admired for qualities such as bravery or honor

  • flawed by a singular weakness

  • doomed to a reversal of fortune (good luck -> bad luck)

  • Aware of their mistakes too late to save themselves

  • Can WIn audience sympathy despite terrible actions

As we learn more about who Macbeth is, think about how many of these boxes his character checks.
