Liaison--When a consonant sound that is not normally pronounced is carried over to a word starting with a vowel.

One example is the letter "t":

petit <<sounds like "puh-tee">> petit ami <<sounds like "puh-teetamee">>

*Read the following expressions:

  • les‿amis

  • les‿enfants

  • les‿hommes

  • un‿ami

  • mon‿ami

  • nos‿enfants

  • des‿animaux

  • aux‿élèves

When the adjective comes before the noun, liaison is usually required.

  • petits‿enfants

  • grands‿arbres

  • bons‿amis

  • beaux‿oiseaux

  • vieux‿amis

Pronoun + Verb

Very common in everyday speech.

  • nous‿avons

  • vous‿êtes

  • ils‿ont

  • elles‿ont

  • on‿a

  • nous‿aimons

  • vous‿avez

Fixed Expressions (Always Liaison)
