Arthur and Gary talked a mile a minute as they walked down the hallway about their upcoming baseball game. The two boys were both on The Blue Pirates baseball team and had suffered a
major loss earlier this week to the Dusty Duos. The two were talking strategy when Arthur suddenly froze in the classroom, Arthur gasped quietly as he stated at Mrs. Leaver's desk. There they were, in a huge stack, the tests the class had taken on Monday.
Mrs. Leaver and Arthur exchanges glances, and Mrs. Leaver gave Author a somber look. Mrs. Leaver's eyes appeared bloodshot, and he noticed a huge cup of coffee steaming on her desk.
Arthur's heart sank, and he quickly put away his backpack and went to find his seat. The night before the test was the Pirates' major defeat, and his baby sister had been crying all night. Arthur was usually a straight-A student, but this test was not his best attempt.
Arthur watched as Mrs. Leaver frantically wrote the lessons on the board for the class to complete. He was slightly surprised because his teacher typically had the information on the
board before the students arrived. She started barking orders at the kids as they arrived. "Class, quick, take out your papers and begin the writing lesson," she said. "I need everyone to be quiet!" she demanded, "I can't hear the announcements."
The class quickly quieted as the principal started to say the Pledge of Allegiance. On routine, all the students put their hands on their hearts as Mrs. Leaver rushed over to the flag behind her
desk. As she was walking, she tripped on an electrical cord and fell towards her table. Her hands extended straight in front of her. In what seemed to be slow motion, the students watched as the coffee flew into the air. Mrs. Leaver's mouth widened, and the liquid came crashing down all over the papers on Mrs. Leaver's desk.
Mrs. Leaver shouted, "No!!!! I haven't recorded the grades yet!" She ran to her desk hysterically and picked up dripping paper after dripping paper. She ran out of the room, grabbed paper
towels, and quickly ran back in. As she dabbed the mess, she saw the tests were beyond repair. She asked the class to continue their writing assignment as she regained composure and tried to figure out what she would do next.
After the writing block, Mrs. Leaver gathered the class to inform them of a change. "Well, kids,"
she began, "I have some good and bad news. The good news is that some of you who did not do so well on the tests on Monday will have another night to study. We will retake the test tomorrow morning, first thing."
"What's the bad news?" one of the students asked. "The bad news," Mrs. Leaver started to state to the class, "is that I will have to pull another all-nighter grading them."
