Peace
Did you know that the peace symbol was originally created to protest against the use of nuclear weapons? It was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958. He was a designer and graduate of London’s Royal College of Arts.
Semaphore is a system of signaling that involves waving a pair of flags in a certain pattern. Each pattern represents a letter of the alphabet. Holtom based his design on this system. He used the semaphore letters for N and D to form the symbol. He chose those letters because they standed for nuclear disarmament. Holtoms design went on to become known worldwide as a general symbol for peace.
