Globalization of Production and Consumption

I couldn't come up with any questions that test the quality of your notes for this section. With that in mind, there are two key concepts that you do need to understand. I have written them in bold below, with the examples that demonstrate those concepts as their bullet points. Please ensure that this section of your notes includes these pieces of information in some way.

A small number of multinational companies control an increasing proportion of agricultural production

  • in 2015, six companies controlled about 70% of the global seed market... by 2023, these six companies had merged into just four*

Changes in consumer preferences have affected the globalization of what foods people consume

  • world chicken trade has grown by 500% since the late 20th century "as the taste for chicken spread worldwide"

*Bayer-Monsanto, DowDuPont/Conteva, ChemCnina-Syngenta, and BASF are the names of the four companies. You may feel free to include them in your notes, but I don't expect that memorizing each of the companies by name will be necessary for this course. That being said, you should be aware that Monsanto has a negative reputation in the agricultural geography world. They are a massive corporation that has been involved in numerous lawsuits relating to negative environmental effects caused by their products. I would recommend that you skim their Wikipedia page to familiarize yourself with it.
