Early Exploration

(1) Long ago, during a time called Early Exploration, brave explorers became curious and wanted to know more about the world! They sailed across big oceans to learn more about Earth. The Kings and queens wanted power, money, and land! They paid the explorers to go find it for them from places that hasn't been discovered yet. The Sailors used ships to travel, and followed the stars to help them get to new and uncharted places all over the world.

(2) One famous explorer was Christopher Columbus. In 1492, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, hoping to find a new route to Asia. Instead, he reached islands like the Bahamas. Columbus felt triumphant, believing he had found a new way to bring spices and gold back to Spain.

(3) When Columbus and his crew landed, they met the Native Americans who already lived there. He was very curious of the Native Americans. But, instead of, trading goods and trying to communicate; Christopher Columbus stole the land, gold, and spices from the Native Americans. He forced them to be slaves. All he cared about was gaining land and power for his King.

(4) Maps were very important during the Early Exploration. The Explorers carefully drew maps to show coastlines, rivers, and new lands. If they found something new, they would draw it on the map! These maps helped future sailors avoid danger and travel more safely. Every time a new explorer sailed, they added more details to the maps, opening up the world to more land and new people for us to see and understand.
