Ms. Rivera smiled and said, “Welcome, readers and problem-solvers!” Maya chose a seat near the window and noticed a basket of books waiting on each table. When the morning bell rang, everyone shared their names and one thing they hoped to learn this year. Maya’s voice shook a little, but she said, “I want to write stories that make people laugh.” After that, Ms. Rivera gave the class a simple challenge: build the tallest tower you could using only paper and tape. Maya teamed up with two classmates she had never met before, and as their tower wobbled and then stood tall, she felt a warm, brave feeling—maybe third grade was going to be a great adventure.
