The Mystery of the Missing Seeds

On Monday morning, Mrs. Carter's third-grade class was excited to check on the small garden they had planted behind the school. Each group had carefully planted flower seeds in its own garden box. The students had watered the soil every day and couldn't wait to see tiny green sprouts. But when they arrived, one garden box looked different. The soil had been dug up, and many of the seeds were gone!

The class became curious. "Maybe a squirrel was looking for food," suggested Ava. "Or maybe a bird picked up the seeds," said Miguel. Mrs. Carter smiled and handed each group a notebook. "Scientists look for clues before they make a decision," she reminded them. The students searched carefully. They noticed tiny footprints in the soft dirt and found a few seed shells nearby.

After studying the clues, the class compared their ideas. The footprints were too small for a dog but just the right size for a squirrel. The seed shells showed that an animal had eaten some of the seeds. Everyone agreed that a hungry squirrel had probably visited the garden during the weekend. To help protect the next batch of seeds, the students covered the garden boxes with a light mesh screen.

A few weeks later, bright green plants began to grow. This time, all of the garden boxes were filled with healthy sprouts. The students were proud that they had solved the mystery by observing carefully and working together. They also learned that gardeners sometimes have to protect their plants from hungry animals. Even though they lost a few seeds, the experience taught them an important lesson about nature and teamwork.
