  1. Alain Locke publishes The New Negro (1925) and gives voice to African Americans who are thirsty for social, political and artistic change. This spurs the New Negro Movement, later to become known as the Harlem Renaissance.

  2. 1910 - Due to Jim Crow Laws, labor shortages in the North and few opportunities in the South, many African Americans begin moving north seeking a better life. This is later called The Great Migration.

  3. Jump Jim Crow is a song and dance performed by Thomas Rice. It features a character that was meant to mock and imitate African Americans. Rice took this traveling performance all over the country, starting around 1828.

  4. From 1890 to 1908, Democrats in the South pass laws to bypass the Enforcement Act. These laws later became known as Jim Crow Laws.

  5. During Reconstruction, many white supremacy groups, including the Ku Klux Klan, try to prevent African Americans from experiencing their rights as free people. The Enforcement Act of 1871 is passed in an effort to protect their rights.

  6. Abraham Lincoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, freeing all slaves. This becomes final when the Civil War ends with the defeat of the South in 1965.
