The Lost Library Book

Maya skipped down the sidewalk with her best friend, Jordan, after school. The sky was bright blue, and the air smelled like spring. Maya’s backpack bumped her back with every step.

“Are you ready for the library project?” Jordan asked.

Maya nodded. “I checked out Animals of the Rainforest. I’m going to use it to write my facts.”

They reached Maple Park, and Jordan spotted the swings. “Let’s play for ten minutes,” he said.

Maya hesitated. She remembered her teacher, Mrs. Lee, saying, “Keep your library books safe.” But Maya also loved the swings.

“I’ll put my backpack on the bench,” Maya decided.

Maya and Jordan raced to the swings. They pumped their legs high and laughed when their shoes flashed in the sunlight. After a while, Jordan pointed to the clock on the park sign.

“Uh-oh,” he said. “Ten minutes is up.”

Maya hurried back to the bench. Her backpack was still there. She grabbed it and felt her stomach drop.

“The book is gone,” Maya whispered.

Jordan looked inside the backpack too. “Maybe it fell out?” he said.

Maya and Jordan searched the grass near the bench. They checked under the bench and behind the trash can. Maya even looked near the swings.

Then Maya saw something yellow sticking out from under the bench. She reached carefully and pulled out her library book.

“It slid under here!” Maya said, letting out a big breath.

Jordan smiled. “Good thing you didn’t give up.”

After that, Maya held the book in her hands all the way home. When she got to her room, she opened it right away and started writing facts for her project.
