Once upon a time, in a small coastal town, there lived a boy named Jake and his family. Jake was excited because summer vacation was just around the corner, and he was looking forward to playing outside with his friends. But one day, everything changed when the news reported that a big hurricane was headed straight for their town.
Jake’s parents gathered in the living room, watching the weather update on TV. “This hurricane is strong, and it might make a direct hit on our town,” Jake heard the meteorologist say. His mom turned to him and said, “Jake, we need to get ready. Schools are closing, and we have to prepare our home.”
Jake felt a mix of excitement and worry. “What do we need to do?” he asked. His dad smiled and said, “First, we need to gather supplies. Let’s make a list!” They wrote down things like water, flashlights, batteries, canned food, and blankets.
The next day, Jake and his family went to the store. The shelves were crowded with people grabbing what they could find. Jake saw families buying water bottles and snacks. “It feels like a big adventure!” he thought. They finally filled their cart with everything they needed and returned home.
As the hurricane got closer, Jake’s family worked together to prepare their house. They closed all the windows and doors, and his dad secured the patio furniture so it wouldn’t blow away. They decided to sleep in the living room, away from windows, just in case. Jake brought out his favorite board games to keep everyone entertained.
That night, the wind began to howl, and the rain pounded against the roof. Jake felt scared but tried to be brave. “It’s like a roller coaster ride,” he told his little sister, Mia, who was holding her stuffed bear tightly. They played games and told stories until they could hardly keep their eyes open.
Suddenly, everything changed. The wind howled louder, and the lights flickered before going out. “Stay calm, everyone!” Jake’s mom said, lighting a candle. The family huddled together on the couch, listening to the storm outside. The sound of the wind was fierce, and Jake could hear branches snapping and things crashing.
Hours later, when the storm finally calmed down, Jake’s family felt relieved. They carefully opened the door to see what had happened outside. The yard was a mess! Branches were everywhere, and some fences were knocked down. But thankfully, their house was still standing.
The next day, Jake and his family went out to help their neighbors. They saw that many homes had damage, but everyone was safe. “We’re lucky,” Jake thought. “We worked together, and we can help each other.”
Even though the hurricane was scary, Jake learned the importance of being prepared and helping others. They spent the next few days cleaning up and sharing supplies with those who needed it. The town came together, and everyone supported one another.

Imagine if Jake and his family had evacuated instead of staying for the hurricane. Write a narrative that shows what life would have been like for them during their evacuation. Where would they have gone? What activities would they have enjoyed while waiting for the storm to pass? Use details from the passage to help you write your narrative.
