“Kids, come here!” Alex’s mom called. Alex, his brother, and his sister trooped into the living room. Their stepdad eagerly ushered them onto the couch, where they looked suspiciously at one another.

“We have some gifts for you,” their mom said, her voice slightly shaking. Their stepdad grinned as he handed each child a gift bag.

Alex furrowed his brow, not sure what occasion they were celebrating.

“Oh, Mom, I think you made a mistake,” Alex’s brother said, pulling a baby rattle out of his bag. “Is this supposed to be for our baby cousin? Her birthday is soon, right?”

Alex pulled out a bib, and his sister held up a pacifier.

“Actually, they are for a different baby,” their mom said. “Surprise! You are getting a new sibling!”

When asked what they want to be when they grow up, many kids respond by simply stating, “a YouTube star.” In fact, a recent survey shows that more kids want to become YouTube stars than astronauts. Adults do not see the importance in YouTube because many of them did not grow up with the popular video app. They see kids spending too much time on their devices trying to achieve a stardom that is almost unattainable. 98% of YouTubers make less than $12,000 a year, which is not nearly enough money to make a living. Adults would rather see kids strive for other career opportunities that are more likely to give them long-lasting financial stability.
