Whenever we use the imperfect, we have to remember that we use it with ongoing actions. This includes using the gerundio, aka the "-ing" form. For example, if I say "I was walking to the pool", we use the gerundio when using "estar"

For AR verbs, the gerundio works as follows:

Ex: Caminar -> caminando

For ER/IR verbs, the gerundio works as follows:

Ex: Comer -> comiendo

Ex: vivir -> viviendo
