Since it's easiest to write a conclusion paragraph when your argument is fresh in your mind, let's pull your paper together first.

1. In your second formative window, open Ad Paper: Step 4 (Introduction). Copy and paste your answer to #7 below.

2. Open the Ad Paper: Step 5 Formative you wrote first. (It's probably Step 5, Part A: Imagery). Scroll down until you find your completed body paragraph (near the bottom, #16 for imagery). Copy and paste it under your introduction.

3. Open the Ad Paper: Step 5 Formative you wrote second. (It might be Step 5, Part B: Tone and Mood). Scroll down until you find your completed body paragraph (near the bottom, #17 for tone and mood). Copy and paste it under your first body paragraph.

4. Open the Ad Paper: Step 5 Formative you wrote third. (It might be Step 5, Part C: Irony). Scroll down until you find your completed body paragraph (near the bottom, #16 for irony). Copy and paste it under your second body paragraph.

Cite sources for both quoted and paraphrased ideas using a standard method of documentation, such as that of the Modern Language Association (MLA) or the American Psychological Association (APA).

Describe how the author accomplishes the intended purpose of a piece of writing.

B. Write your conclusion.

Now that you have your introduction and all your body paragraphs in one place and in order, read your paper so far.

Make a list of three or four points that you made in the paper or insights that you have while reading it. Think about the ad's overall message about its product.

Here's Mrs. Doyle's list:
--the ad plays with expectations
--the ad consistently portrays the iphone as a magic device
--the ad focuses on relationships, but shows the relationships happening through the use of the iPhone

Next, write one complete sentence that connects your rhetorical strategy the ad's overall message or purpose or to one of the insights you wrote down in the last question.

Look back at your thesis (the last sentence of your introduction) if you need to, but try not to restate it exactly.

Here are two possible ways to start your sentence:

--Throughout "Title of Ad" Company Name uses an appeal to (rhetorical strategy) to....
--Taken as a whole, "Title of Ad" conveys a consistent message: ____________________

Example: Throughout "The City," Apple uses an appeal to pathos to portray the iPhone as a magical piece of technology that lifts its owners out of the ordinary world.

Now write one or two complete sentences that link the literary devices you analyzed to another of your insights from #4 or to the ad's overall message.

Example: The ad's striking imagery, romantic tone, and subtle irony all suggest that the iPhone can be more than a phone: it can be a tool to create and strengthen relationships. "If you buy this phone," Apple whispers to its audience, "You too can be as playful and as romantically-focused as the lovers in this ad."

Finally, write one or two complete sentences that wrap up your paper by connecting what you have just said to the statements you made at the very beginning of your introduction.

These last sentences should leave your reader with a sense that you have made a clear, complete argument.

Hint: Go back and read the opening of your introduction before you write. You may want to use some of the same words and phrases.

Example: Although no product or piece of technology can transform a user's personality, environment, and relationships, Apple's clever ad coaxes us into feeling that the iPhone 7 might be just that special. The ad manipulates our hearts to convince us to open our wallets.
