Notes for preface:

No longer including taxonomy/kingdoms, succession, or C/N cycles in this unit

The new numbering for TEKS in this unit are:

  • 13A) Symbiosis - Readiness

  • 13B) Energy - Readiness

  • 13D) Human impacts on biodiversity - Readiness (old 12.D Supporting)

  • 11A) PS/CR - Supporting

For this reason, I did not pull any portions of the assessment that do not align to the new standards (ex: we had succession and symbiosis in the same quiz - I did not pull over the succession portion of the assessment for this bank)

Sequence of lessons:

Last year we did PS/CR in Unit 3 --> 9.1 was energy --> 9.2 Succession/Symbiosis (human impact was not included)

This year we jotted down an idea on the roadmap. Can we revisit this once we finish building the assessments?

Gradebook:

Last year we only had quizzes for these TEKS, no unit assessment. For this year, I suggest we do the same and keep this unit with separate quiz grades by readiness standard.

So long as we have 2 test grades coming from symposium week, we will meet the 3 test minimum (unit 7 trest + 2 symposium test grades? Or we can discuss taking their STAAR Bootcamp exit ticket average for a test grade?)

In some coral reefs, a symbiotic relationship exists between pygmy seahorses and sea fans. The pygmy seahorse can wrap its tail around the branches of the sea fan. This allows the pygmy seahorse to be camouflaged within the sea fan, protecting it from predators. The pygmy seahorse does not harm or benefit the sea fan while it grasps the branches with its tail.

What is the correct classification of this symbiotic relationship?

Test review warm up (add second portion for how do you know)

Four common relationships between organisms are listed below. Use the descriptions to classify each relationship. Choose the correct answer from the drop-down menus to complete the statement. Some answers will be used once, more than once, or not at all.

QUIZ

Researchers have observed striped hyenas and gray wolves hunting together in certain areas. One hypothesis suggests that changing hunting behavior aids both species in obtaining better and more resources.

In this hypothesis, the hyenas benefit because the wolves chase and take down large animals, such as goats, that the hyenas usually cannot catch alone. The wolves benefit from hyenas using their jaw strength to crack open large bones of prey to access additional nutrients from bone marrow.

Which table best identifies the ecological relationship among the gray wolf, hyena, and goats?

QUIZ

Leaf-cutter ants harvest leaves and carry them to fungi that convert plant material into a usable form for the ants to digest. the fugi depend on the leaves for nutrients. The ants also produce an antibiotic on their bodies that helps protect the fungi from harmful bacteria.

Which of these explains the relationship between the leaf-cutter ants and the fungi?

TEST

The ocean sunfish (Mola mola) is a large, flat fish that spends most of its time in deep water feeding mainly on jellyfish. Sunfish often have many species of copepods, small crustaceans, that bury their heads into the soft tissue of the sunfish. Sunfish will swim to the surface of the water and lie sideways, allowing seabirds to eat the copepods from their skin.

Which list describes the types of relationships the sunfish has with other marine organisms?
