Text 7: A Different Kind of School Day
Next month, Jayden will start his four-week internship at a small garage near his house. He is a bit nervous, but he is also excited. At school, Jayden has already practised many useful skills in the car mechanic workshop. He has learned how to use basic tools, check tyres, work safely and keep his workplace tidy.
However, working in a real garage will be different from practising at school. At the garage, Jayden will meet real customers, and the cars will not belong to teachers or classmates. His boss, Mr Lake, will explain the safety rules and show him what he is allowed to do. Jayden will not repair engines alone, but he will watch, help and ask questions.
During the internship, Jayden will also practise telephone calls with clients. He may have to answer the phone, ask for the client’s name, listen to the problem and write down a clear message. This worries him, because he sometimes forgets words when he is nervous. Nevertheless, he understands that good communication is part of the job.
By the end of the four weeks, Jayden hopes to feel more confident. He already knows that being on time, listening carefully and working neatly are just as important as being good with tools.
