Directional Terminology and CREATURE PROJECT!

Directional terms will come in very handy this year in Anatomy & Physiology. Not only will we be describing the locations of many organs using directional terminology, but many bone and muscle landmarks contain directional terminology.

Today, we'll be labeling some pre-drawn pictures with the directional terms you learned. This is all in preparation for the start of a project that we will be working on all semester.

With your group, share...

1. Your name

2. Your favorite thing to eat for breakfast

3. Your pet (if you have one) or what kind of pet you would want (if you don't have one)

4. Your weekend plans

Who goes first?: The person with the most siblings!

Once you're done sharing, answer: who are your group members today?

CREATURE PROJECT!

Today, we will be starting a quarter-long project. Over the course of the next seven weeks, you will complete this project in a series of steps. Today is step one, when you will use directional terminology to draw and label a creature from four perspectives: Anterior, Posterior, Superior, and Lateral.

Your creature should...

  • have at least one hand

  • have at least five extremities (limbs / tails)

  • have distinct markings on each limb

  • be drawn on plain white paper or graph paper (please, no lined notebook paper.)

  • be colored (colored pencils are best, but crayon or nice pens work ok too. Please, no thick marker!)

On the drawings, you will also draw arrows indicate the following directions, where applicable:

  • Superior

  • Inferior

  • Medial

  • Lateral

  • Anterior

  • Posterior

  • Ventral

  • Dorsal

  • Proximal

  • Distal

This project will be done old school (drawing!) on plain white paper. Note that we will be adding to this project for the whole semester, so you will have a lot of time to edit / make changes as we go.

Phase one of the project will require four sheets of paper, and your drawings should be set as follows:

While considering the requirements written above, use the space below to brainstorm the anterior view of your creature.
