Bacteria which live on the root nodules of legumes ( a type of plant like beans and peas) can fix nitrogen from the air and make it useable for the plant.

The table shows the results of an investigation into the effect of using either nitrogen fertiliser or root nodule bacteria on the amount of seed produced by a soya bean crop.
