There are two main categories of mutations.

POINT mutations only change one base and do not greatly impact the DNA sequence. These can be SILENT Substitutions, which change a base but does not change the amino acid sequence, or NON-SILENT Substitutions, which change a base AND change one amino acid in the sequence.

FRAMESHIFT mutations ADD or DELETE bases from the DNA sequence and "shifts" the entire sequence over. These can be insertions (adding bases) or deletions (deleting bases). The mutated sequence then "shifts" over because we have added or removed bases from it. Frameshift mutations have a greater impact on the protein produced because more bases are moved around than in a point mutation.
