Enzymes are special types of proteins that help speed up chemical reactions. Remember: we said proteins help build things for our bodies. Some enzymes will break things into smaller pieces for our bodies to use, while others will put things together.

The enzyme we will be working with today is called catalase (found in the liver). Its function is to take hydrogen peroxide (a substrate) and break it down into oxygen gas and water (the products). If the enzyme catalase is working properly, you will see bubbles form as it breaks down the hydrogen peroxide.
