Remember that genetics is the study of heredity: how traits are passed from parents to offspring.

The information and instructions for these traits are stored within DNA. We organize these traits into segments of DNA called genes.

An organism's genetic makeup determines its physical traits. We describe the genetic makeup (genes) as a genotype, and we call the actual physical traits a phenotype.

The dog phenotype you will examine today has two different versions of the facial hair gene. We call different versions of genes alleles. Dogs with "Furnishings" have more facial hair and longer eye brows.

The three dogs below have different genotypes for the facial hair gene. Examine the diagram below, then answer the questions.

In dogs, Furnishings is dominant to no furnishings.

Dogs with furnishings have a "mustache" and hairy eyebrows.

Dogs that are part Poodle and part Labrador are called Labradoodles.
