Pine borer beetles are a species of insect that chew through the bark of many species of pine trees. After they have chewed through the bark of the trees they eat the inner bark and lay their eggs inside the tree. Pine borer beetles cause significant damage to trees.

There are 4 alleles (variant of a gene) in the population of pine borer beetles. Each different allele is represented by a different colored bead.

After a prolonged drought in an area a forest fire is caused by a lightening strike. The forest fire destroyed 90% of the pine trees and 90% of the pine borers.

Aquatic snails are common mollusks that live in freshwater habitats across the world. They live in a variety of habitats, including lagoons.

The West Lagoon and the East Lagoon are separated by a narrow sandbar. One population of snails lives in the West Lagoon and another population of snails lives in the East Lagoon.

There are 3 alleles (variant of a gene) in the population of aquatic snails. Each different allele is represented by a different colored bead.

A hurricane washes away the sandbar that separates the two lagoons, forming one large lagoon. Despite the hurricane, all the snails survived.
