Reading Passage:

A virus is made up of a strand of DNA or RNA covered by a protein coating. Viruses can infect animals, plants, and even bacteria. Like living things, viruses can evolve over time and adapt to their environment. Unlike living things though, viruses cannot use their genetic information (DNA) to reproduce by themselves; they need a living cell (called a host cell) in order to reproduce and respond to stimuli. Since viruses are not made up of cells, there is no need to maintain homeostasis nor do they require energy for metabolism (no need for food). Viruses only need energy when they make copies of themselves inside the host cell with the help of the energy produced by the host cell. Viruses do not grow or get bigger in size inside their protein coat.
