A student is writing a report for health class about the advantages of vitamin and mineral supplements. Read the draft of the report and complete the task that follows.

Few people would be able to consume the necessary amounts of foods with all the recommended nutrients. A one-day supply of calcium would require one cup of milk, one cup of broccoli, one cup of navy beans, one cup of yogurt and four ounces of canned pink salmon. That is just one nutrient! Further, special circumstances prevent different people from relying solely on a balanced diet. Many people are tremendously busy, and they have to grab fast food wherever they are when it is mealtime. Often senior citizens just do not have that much appetite.

Increasingly suspect is the quality of food available. Food processing often drains the nutrition from foods. Canned vegetables are nowhere near as robust when they get to the table as fresh. Even fresh vegetables are a risk. From the moment they are picked, the food value diminishes. If you live in Minnesota, those Florida oranges have traveled for a couple of days to arrive in Minnesota. Many people’s budgets cannot afford locally grown, organic produce.

Most people do not get the required nutrients from their daily diet. The low-cost, efficient answer lies in vitamin supplements. They are as close as the nearest supermarket or pharmacy. Online outlets often offer significant savings on a variety of supplements. When the food on the plate falls short and doesn’t include essential nutrients such as calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12, some of the nutrients many Americans don’t get enough of, a supplement can help take up the nutritional slack. Vitamin and mineral supplements can help prevent deficiencies that contribute to chronic conditions.

Write an introductory paragraph to the draft of the report that establishes and introduces a clear claim about the use of vitamin and mineral supplements.
