Time: 15–20 minutes
Goal: Your child will practice identifying letters and connecting letters to their sounds.
Say:
“Today we're going to practice phonics. Phonics means we learn the sounds that letters make. Knowing letter sounds helps us read words.”
Pick 5 letters and ask:
B — “What sound does B make?”
M — “What sound does M make?”
S — “What sound does S make?”
T — “What sound does T make?”
C — “What sound does C make?”
If they get one wrong, just say the sound together and move on.
Say a word and have your child tell you the first sound.
Try:
cat → /k/
ball → /b/
sun → /s/
dog → /d/
fish → /f/
Then say:
“Great! The first sound we hear helps us figure out the first letter.”

Before starting, tell them:
“While we watch, listen carefully to the letter sounds. You can sing along if you want!”
Play the video:
ABC Phonics Song
While watching, occasionally pause and ask:
“What sound did that letter make?”
Don't pause too often—let them enjoy the song.
Play “What Letter?”
You say the sound, and they tell you the letter.
Try:
/m/ → M
/b/ → B
/s/ → S
/t/ → T
/f/ → F
/k/ → C
Then reverse it:
You say the letter, and they say the sound.
Ask these orally:
What does phonics help us learn?
→ Letter sounds.
What sound does B make?
→ /b/
What letter starts the word “dog”?
→ D
What letter starts the word “cat”?
→ C
Why do we learn letter sounds?
→ They help us read words.
Finish With EncouragementSay:
“You practiced letters and sounds today! Every time you learn a letter sound, you're getting better at reading.”
