Jordan was walking down the quiet seventh-grade hallway when he heard a strange noise.
Bzzzzzz!
He stopped beside locker 218. The noise stopped too.
Jordan leaned closer. "Hello?"
Bzzzzzz!
He jumped backward and nearly dropped his backpack.
His friend Amari turned the corner. "Why are you talking to a locker?"
"It keeps buzzing," Jordan whispered.
Amari laughed. "Maybe it's hungry."
"I'm serious!" Jordan said. "Listen."
The two students stood silently. For a moment, they heard nothing. Then the locker began to shake.
BZZZZZZ!
Amari's smile disappeared. "Okay. That is strange."
They hurried to find Ms. Carter, the school secretary. She followed them back to the locker while carrying a ring of keys.
"Locker 218 hasn't been assigned to anyone this year," Ms. Carter explained.
That made Jordan even more curious.
Ms. Carter placed a key into the lock. "Everyone, stand back."
The door slowly opened.
Jordan expected something frightening to jump out. Instead, a small robot rolled forward and bumped into Ms. Carter's shoe.
The robot had one blinking green eye and a crooked cardboard sign taped to its back.
Jordan bent down and read the sign aloud:
"Science Club Project. Please return to Room 104."
Just then, Mr. Lewis, the science teacher, came running down the hallway.
"There it is!" he shouted. "I've been looking everywhere for that robot!"
Mr. Lewis explained that his students had programmed the robot to travel through a maze. During lunch, someone accidentally left the classroom door open. The robot rolled into the hallway and somehow entered the empty locker.
"But why was it buzzing?" Amari asked.
"The robot sends a signal when it gets trapped," Mr. Lewis explained.
Jordan smiled. "So the locker wasn't haunted after all."
"No," Amari said, "but I still think the robot was hungry."
Everyone laughed as Mr. Lewis carried the robot back to the science room. Jordan and Amari hurried to class before the tardy bell rang.
As they walked away, Jordan heard another faint buzz coming from the other side of the hallway.
He stopped.
Amari looked at him. "Keep walking, Jordan. We are not opening another locker today."
