Los Sanfermines – A Festival in Spain
Every July, the city of Pamplona, Spain, celebrates a famous festival called Los Sanfermines, or the Festival of San Fermín. The celebration takes place in honor of San Fermín, the patron saint associated with the city.
One of the best-known traditions of the festival is the encierro, or running of the bulls. During the encierro, bulls run through closed-off streets while participants run ahead of them toward the bullring. Because this activity can be dangerous, runners must follow safety rules.
Los Sanfermines are about more than the bulls. The festival also includes music, dancing, parades, fireworks, traditional clothing, and religious celebrations. Many participants wear white clothing with a red scarf around their necks.
Festivals such as Los Sanfermines help communities preserve traditions and bring people together. At the same time, traditions involving animals can lead to different opinions and discussions about culture and animal welfare.
