The landowner’s appetite for coins was never quenched. Within a short time of receiving more income from taxes, the
landowners pleaded with the king to increase the taxes even higher. Already scrambling to pay the money, the peasants
suffered even more by not having enough wood for their fires and by having to eat their porridge raw. Winthrop rallied the peasants and each one agreed to form a line along the edge of the city and demand for the taxes to be returned to their previous rate. Stubbornly, the landowners ignored the requests. Days passed and none of the peasants budged from their position. Upset and frustrated, they refused to pay any taxes. After many more days passed, the landowners grew weary and granted the peasants their request for lower taxes. The peasants hailed Winthrop a hero.
