The early 20th century marked several social changes. As more immigrants sought a new life in America, American
citizens became increasingly more wary. Stricter immigration regulations were introduced making it nearly impossible
for immigrants to enter the United States. Schools sought to “Americanize” foreign students by forbidding them to
speak in their native languages and practice their customs. As late as the 1800s, most citizens adhered to strict social
laws of “proper behavior” and “proper dress”. For the first time during the, early 1900s young ladies wore skirts that
reached higher than their ankles and young girls wore lipstick. Teenagers stayed out late to joyride in automobiles.
Older generations believed the morals of the youth were being destroyed. Opinions of previously held beliefs changed.
