Mom and Bryan walked in the door from hockey practice. "Head straight to the shower," Mom said, "it's late, and you're stinky!"
Bryan smiled and headed up the stairs. Mom began putting his hockey gear in the washing machine and cleaning out his backpack. Earlier in the day, Bryan had assured her that he didn't have homework, so he could stay later at hockey practice. Now that they were home, she pulled his planner out of his backpack to sign it for the day. A flyer fell out of his planner.
"Don't forget about the bake sale tomorrow!" it read.
When Bryan got out of the shower, mom asked him about it. His eyes got wide as he remembered that he had signed mom up to bring cupcakes. "I...I am so, so sorry," he stammered.
Mom groaned, but said she would still make the cupcakes. "Next time, don't wait until nine o'clock the night before!" When Bryan headed up to bed, mom got all of the cupcake ingredients out. Just as she was about to start baking, she realized she didn't have any butter or oil, like the recipe called for.
She really did not want to go to the store at this hour, but she also didn't want Bryan to show up at school without cupcakes. Mom grabbed her iPad and looked up, "oil substitute". Right away, results began showing up on her screen. Applesauce was the first suggestion, and she had that! She squeezed the applesauce into the recipe, popped the batter in the oven and crossed her fingers.
Sure enough, after a few minutes, the cupcakes began to rise, and in no time at all, they were perfectly formed and ready to go! She covered the tops with frosting and put them on a plate. She was exhausted, but at least Bryan would be thrilled!

Marcus had just turned sixteen and had been hired by a construction company to help build fences. He was thrilled about his new job, and he couldn't wait to get started. His first job was to help build a huge fence around a cow pasture for a local farmer.
He and his partner spent a full week cutting, measuring, sawing, and nailing the fence into place. There was so much hammering to be done and more splinters than he had ever had in his life! When Friday rolled around, they were sure they would be able to finish the job by that afternoon. As they cut the last pieces of wood for the fence and put them ito place, they noticed that the final section of fencing was not long enough to complete the job. "No problem!" his partner had reassured him. "This happens all the time. We will just get it as close as we can."
They cut the last piece and hammered and nailed it in. The fence looked perfect, and Marcus was thrilled with the work they had done. That night, the farmer placed his cows in the pasture, not noticing the gap that had been left.
The next morning, though, all of the cows were gone! They had escaped from the pasture overnight through the tiny opening the boys had left. The farmer called them back to fix their mistake.
Marcus felt terrible! He knew it didn't make sense to leave part of a fence open, and he knew he needed to fix it. The gap wasn't big enough for another section of fencing, but it was big enough to put a narrow gate. He worked all day constructing a gate and put it in the blank space. The cows never left the pasture again, and Marcus learned an important lesson.
